Discussion topics for before reading:
•  What do you know about Colombia?
•  What do you think you think it would be like to visit Colombia?

Vocabulary:

•  Lent - the forty weekdays from Ash Wednesday to Easter, observed by Christians as a time to fast, pray, and be sorry for having done wrong.

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  If you went to the beach in Colombia, what would you do there?
•  Have you ever eaten arepas or ajiaco? If you have, what did they taste like?
•  Why do you think the Caño Cristales changes colors?

Craft ideas:
•  Make spectaled bear puppets using paper plates and popsicle sticks.
•  Draw the costumes that people wear to the Carnaval de Barranquilla.

Special activities:
•  The volunteers can show the children where Colombia is on a map.
•  Discuss what t it would be like to live in Colombia.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
