Schools

Last updated July 20, 2009

The first reading clubs began at Gratts Elementary School in May 1999 when volunteers, parents, teachers, and administrators came together to start the "Gratts Reading Clubs," whose purpose was to inspire the children of Gratts Elementary with a love of reading. As the months progressed, more children began to attend the monthly reading clubs and more volunteers got involved. The success of the monthly reading clubs quickly led to the formation of Reading to Kids.

School Map

At the school level, the teachers and administrators are essential in running the reading clubs. The principals, assistant principals, teachers, and literacy coordinators recruit the students each month, select the books that are used in the program, and provide overall guidance as to the needs of the schools. Teachers at the schools also lead the training provided for volunteers and parents.

Reading to Kids expanded its program to
Esperanza Elementary School in March 2000,
Magnolia Elementary School in March 2001,
Hoover Elementary School in June 2006,
Politi Elementary School in November 2006,
White Elementary School in April 2007,
Los Angeles Elementary School in September 2007, and Alta Loma Elementary in May 2008.
In the future, Reading to Kids hopes to expand this successful program to other elementary schools in the Los Angeles area.
