Note to readers:
•  This is a chapter book that you won?t be able to finish. Aim to read through page 49, and tell the children that the book will be placed into their library if they would like to check it out and read the rest.

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  Looking at the title and the cover, what do you think this book is about?
•  Where is Denmark? What do you know about World War II? What is a Swastica? What is a Star of David? Have you read the Diary of Anne Frank?

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  How important are friends? How far would you go to protect your friends from a bully?
•  The Danish destroyed their ships so that the Germans wouldn?t get them. What do you think about that?
•  What do you think about the story? What would you have done in Anne Marie's place?
•  What is freedom? How would your life be different if you lived in the time of the book?

Craft ideas:
•  This is a book without pictures. Pick a scene from the book and illustrate what you think is happening.
•  Make a postcard from Ellen to Anne Marie telling her what has happened since she left.

Special activities:
•  Read more of the book.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
