Synopsis: The year is 1942 and America is at war with Japan. All Japanese-Americans are being sent to live in internment camps for the duration of the war, including seven-year-old Emi and her family. Before they go, Emi's friend, Laurie, gives her a gold heart bracelet to remember their friendship. But upon her arrival at the camp, Emi discovers she has lost the bracelet. How will she remember her friend now?

Discussion topics: To be posted soon ...

Craft ideas:
•  Make a bracelet or arm band out of construction paper, and write and draw on it what it means to be a good friend. What message do you think Lori would have written on the bracelet's heart?
•  How do you remember your best friend? Draw and write.

*Note: These craft ideas are just suggestions. You can use them, but you don't have to use them. You can expand upon them, or add your own twist. Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
