Synopsis: Prepare for plenty of giggles as a Kindergarten class arrives for their first day of school but can't find their teacher - only a delicious-looking sandwich and the words "Mr. S" scribbled on the chalkboard. Chaos ensues as the kids argue whether the sandwich must be their teacher.

Discussion topics for before reading:
•  How do you feel on the first day of school?
•  What do you imagine Mr. S's last name is?

Vocabulary
•  Impressive - having a lasting effect on the mind or feeling; making a strong impression.
•  Clatter - to make a loud rattling noise.
•  Murmur - to make a soft, muffled, continuous sound.
•  Unconventional - not conforming to convention, rule, or custom.

Discussion topics for during/after reading:
•  Where do you suppose the teacher is?
•  Do you think a sandwich can be a good teacher? Why or why not?
•  How would you rate Mr. S as a teacher?

Craft ideas:
•  The children can make a pretend sandwiches out of construction paper.
•  The children can draw the principal.

Special activities:
•  The children can discuss what it would be like to have a sandwich as a teacher.
•  REMINDER: if you don’t have air conditioning, on a very hot day your public library has AC to help keep you cool.

Remember, though, that the focus of your time should not be on the development and execution of a craft; the focus should be on the read-aloud and the enjoyment of the book!
